The Peso

At a glance

Mexico's currency broke in December 1994, and the United States helped arrange a rescue.

If money is tight

If money is tight, a peso crisis is your problem if you work for a firm that sells into Mexico or competes with one.

If you are in the middle

If you already have assets

If you have savings, you may hold the funds that were about to take the loss.

In December 1994 the Mexican peso collapsed and investors fled.

Early in 1995 the United States and the International Monetary Fund organized support so Mexico could meet dollar debts.
