A Bank Run

At a glance

Regulators seized Silicon Valley Bank in March 2023 after depositors ran and the bank's bonds could not be sold without losses.

If money is tight

If money is tight, you learn whether your balance is under the insurance cap.

If you are in the middle

Silicon Valley Bank was seized in March 2023.

It held longer-term bonds that had fallen in value because interest rates had risen, and its customers, many of them with balances above the insurance limit, pulled deposits.

The government protected depositors at the failed banks, and other regional banks wobbled in the same weeks.
